Drama on the Moors

The Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety (LPRS) asked us to make a road safety film about a young driver, Matthew Hannon, who was killed racing his mate. The objective: to help stop other young drivers killing and injuring themselves and others on the roads of Lancashire.

With care and sensitivity, working closely with Matthew’s family, we built an emotional story that gets the message home. It’s often very painful to watch. We even made a bunch of hardened Yorkshire fire-fighters cry.

The original remit was to produce a film aimed directly at young drivers. But our research with sources such as Brake and ROSPA showed that if they have the right tools, parents can have a great deal of influence over their children’s driving. They can make them twice and take more care.

So we produced the film in two parts.

Part one is the emotional story. It’s designed to be a thought-provoker for discussion with young people, and to help parents face up to the need to do something to stop their kids from ending up like Matthew.

Part two is about giving parents the practical advice they need. We didn't want it to be a lecture and risk losing our audience, so we used real police officers (with kids of their own) to reiterate the tragic losses they see every day, to talk about the signs to watch out for, and to advise how best to approach the topic with their children. Please call us on 0800 587 5886 to see part 2.

The Missing Matthew DVD is now starting to get huge interest from a wide variety of organisations including the Highways Agency, central government, and others involved in road safety.
